AI-Generated vs. AI-Assisted Content: What's the Difference?

Your content is AI-assisted if you created it yourself and used AI tools to help along the way. You are the creator; AI was a helper.

Some examples:

You wrote the manuscript and used an AI tool to check grammar, suggest edits, or brainstorm ideas
You designed your cover and used AI to adjust colors, remove a background, or improve image quality
You translated your book and used AI to double-check phrasing

What you need to do: On the upload form, tick the AI-assisted option for each area where AI helped you. AI-assisted books and covers are accepted as usual.

AI-generated content

Your content is AI-generated if an AI tool created it (text, images, a translation, or narration), even if you reviewed or edited the result afterward.

Some examples:

An AI tool wrote chapters or the full manuscript based on your prompts
Your cover image was created by an AI image generator
Your book was translated by an AI tool
Your audiobook is narrated by an AI voice

What you need to do: On the upload form, tick the AI-generated option that fits for each area. You don't need to add anything to your metadata, such as the Creators or Narrator fields; we process your answers automatically.

A quick way to decide

Ask yourself: Who created the first version?

You did, and AI helped you improve it → AI-assisted
AI did, even if you edited it afterward → AI-generated

The AI usage declaration during upload

When you upload a book, you'll see an AI usage declaration covering four areas. For each area, tick the option that best describes your book. That's all: no extra metadata fields to fill in.

If you're unsure, choose the option that describes more AI involvement. It's always safer to declare.

Store-specific rules

Some stores have their own policies on AI content. Most importantly, Audible currently does not accept AI-narrated audiobooks, so these won't be delivered to Audible even if you select it.

Why this matters

Being transparent about AI use protects your book. Stores may remove titles or restrict accounts when AI-generated content isn't declared. An accurate declaration helps your book get through review smoothly and keeps it available to readers.
